· Co-devised with David Sant of
comic wizards Peepolykus
· The man who brought Kenneth Williams triumphantly back to life comes
home to the Assembly Rooms with an All-Star Cast
· The man behind Janet Street-Porter’s Edinburgh debut All The
Rage
Who would be on your Fantasy Party guest
list?
Some people dream about it…
David Benson lives it.
Every night he whoops it up with the heroes
of his youth:
Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Noel Coward, Judy Garland, Eric Morecambe, Orson
Welles, Ethel Merman, Groucho Marx… and more.
Okay, so they’re all dead –
but to Benson they’re almost TOO alive:
· Noel and Judy have sexual designs on him
· Sinatra blows the lid on the Rat Pack, Ava and Marilyn
· John le Mesurier describes an episode of Dad’s Army that certainly
NEVER made it to the screen...
As the booze and ‘extra strong’ cigarettes flow freely, one or two
pedestals start to look decidedly wobbly. Which star will be the first to fall?
Having dazzled audiences from Edinburgh
to the West End of London with his brilliant exposés of Kenneth Williams
(Think No Evil of Us - My Life With Kenneth Williams) and Frankie Howerd (To
Be Frank) - both of whom make a cameo appearance here, performing a riotous
duet - Benson storms back to Edinburgh with this hysterical new show. The result
of a year’s work with Catalonian comic genius David Sant of Fringe favourites
Peepolykus (Let The Donkey Go! Goose Nights and this year’s Mindbender,
also at Assembly) Star Struck is, says Benson, “part celebration, part
psychodrama. I think you can learn much more about these people by looking at
them as characters rather than as worthy biographical figures. I don’t
do facts or dates. I like to put them all together like rats in a cage and see
what happens!”
· Benson also reveals his personal links with many of these stars –
including a real life close encounter with Eric Morecambe!
2003 promises to be a bumper year for Benson watchers. As well as providing title and material for the new Linda Marlowe show No Fear! he was Janet Street-Porter’s chosen man to co-devise and direct her Edinburgh Fringe debut All The Rage (both shows also at Assembly).
